(LDO)- Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadkin said the country is ready to stop treating Covid-19 as a pandemic and start seeing it as an endemic disease.

Endemic diseases, which are common epidemics in the community, only need to be prevented by basic measures, no longer need strict isolation and quarantine, and many medical procedures can be reduced.

The Tempo newspaper cited Budi Gunadi Sadkin's argument that the decision was based on a downward trend in positive cases, supported by increasing public health awareness.

The minister said the Indonesian government is confident in easing restrictions to prevent the Covid-19 epidemic during the Muslim community's holy month of Ramadan. People are allowed to attend mass in their home country and hold other celebrations under certain conditions, such as having had all the recommended vaccinations.

He confirmed that the sub-variant BA.2 of Omicron did cause the increase in positive cases, but did not complicate the situation like in Hong Kong (China) and mainland China.

Recently, several other Asian countries have recorded new mutant lines of Omicron, such as XE and XJ recombination of BA.1 and BA.2 in Thailand or an unidentified recombination in Suzhou - China, however, experts and authorities advise people not to worry.

"We should be closely monitoring new recombinants, but should not panic at this time. It is not surprising to see recombinant variants of Covid-19, or a combination of the two strains, especially Delta and Omicron, because these two strains have circulated widely and it is possible that some people have been infected with both strains," said Professor Leo Poon, a virologist from the University of Hong Kong.

Earlier, Thai authorities also said that the wave caused by the new strain XE Omicron, if any, would be mild. Patients with XE and XJ strains of Covid-19 in this country all have mild disease.

There is currently no evidence that recombinant lines from Omicron subtypes or between Omicron and Delta produce a difference in virulence. Only XE is suspected by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UK health authorities that it can spread about 10% faster than BA.2, but further consideration is needed because after 2.5 months in circulation, This recombinant still accounts for only about 1% of the SARS-CoV-2 gene sequences decoded in the UK.
